Sport Fishing Community Mourns Loss of Walter Johnson III

Walter Johnson,  a well known fisherman, duck hunter, and all around sportsman, passed away in July of 2018.  Walter was one of those lovable giants of the marine industry whose passion for fishing was known up and down the East Coast.  Walter was a big supporter of the New Jersey Marine Trades Association and the Recreational Fishing Alliance.  Walt and the Johnson and Towers Group supplied diesel motors for the sportfishing industry and outfitted many of the leading boat manufacturers.  He and his late brother in-law, Bob Shomo, were engaged in all the issues that effect our industry.  Walter was always on the phone with us discussing regulations and legislation effecting fishermen and the industry.  Walter’s love of hunting dogs, duck and upland hunting was probably equal to his love of fishing.  He was always comfortable being outdoors on the bay or in a field as he was in the offshore canyons chasing blue and white marlin.

I was one of the lucky ones who got to spend time with this giant of a man who always had a smile and nothing ever bad to say about anyone.  We will all miss Walter’s kindness and generosity.

Walter’s family has requested that donations in Walter’s memory be made to the Recreational Fishing Alliance.  Donations can be made by sending a check to the RFA at PO Box 3080, New Gretna, NJ 08224 or with a credit card by using the PayPal button below.
