|
Senate commerce Committee passes legislation creating an all-hazards alerting system
Last week, the Senate Commerce Committee passed legislation (S. 1753) creating a unified alerting system that will allow federal, state, and local officials to provide alerts to their communities across a variety of communication technologies. The system will be administered by NOAA and will be capable of providing geographically precise alerts of the threats posed by natural disasters, man-made accidents and terrorist incidents. The bill will also establish a grant program to install technologies in rural and other communities where technology penetration may not be high. S. 1753 now awaits consideration by the full Senate.
Senate approves FY06 funding for Department of Commerce
Last month, the Senate approved $4.4 billion in funding for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The bill would provide $90 million for the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund, with $13 million directed to Oregon; more than $17 million for Columbia River Hatcheries and hatchery reform; $5.2 million for West Coast Groundfish Research; $5 million for West Coast Observers; and $1 million for West Coast Groundfish Cooperative Research. The bill must now go to a joint House-Senate Conference Committee where it will be reconciled with the House-passed bill. |
